Solar Panels, 200 Watts and over

For most residential solar electric systems, larger wattage solar panels are the best choice., and nearly all of our systems are built around these larger panels. Price per watt is lower, and overall installation cost is reduced. In fact, if you are planning a solar array of 500 watts or more, chances are that you'll be better off using these higher wattage solar panels, even considering the higher cost of a premium MPPT charge controller.

Most of our 200 watt+ solar panels operate at about 30 volts or more. This means that the voltage is too high for use with typical lower-cost charge controllers such as Xantrex C-series, Morningstar Tristar, and similar units. You'll need a premium controller such as Outback, Midnite Solar, Apollo, Xantrex XW, or some Blue Sky models. These controller can handle the higher solar panel voltage and "squeeze" it down to match your battery. There are several advantages that go along with this including: smaller wire sizes, less voltage loss, and up to 30% more energy harvest with MPPT technology.

In battery-based power systems, 1 to 3 panels connected in series are needed for 12 volt batteries. 2 to 3 series connected panels are needed to charge 24 volt batteries. 3 panels must be connected in series for charging 48 volt battery systems.
