DC Submersible Pumps

DC Submersible Well Pumps are commonly used in place of AC-powered pumps because of their increased efficiency. DC pumps require no DC-to-AC power conversion (power inverter), which translates to increased reliability and efficiency, and a lower equipment cost. When used with a renewable energy system such as solar, the pump can operate directly from the main battery storage without putting additional load on the power inverter. This greatly reduces overall system cost when the inverter would have to be sized larger to handle the substantial load of a well pump. Since water pumping is such an essential component of most off-grid households, there is an added benefit from a DC-powered pump because it does not rely on a generator or power inverter for operation. Since most power inverters operate at 85% to 94% efficiency, there is also a substantial energy savings.
