A deep cycle battery or "solar battery" is at the heart of any off-grid electric power system. After a proper installation, a solar electric system is mostly automated with the exception of the battery. A deep cycle battery requires some minor periodic maintenance. But more importantly, it needs to be FULLY charged on a frequent basis. The battery in a renewable energy system often takes a lot of abuse, which is why you should always purchase the best deep cycle battery that you can afford and then give it the best possible care. In many ways, getting maximum lifespan from your battery is a measure of your skill and success as an off-the-grid system owner.
Sizing your deep cycle battery to the rest of the power system is vitally important to efficient performance and long battery life. Bigger isn't always better, and buying a battery system that is too large is a very common mistake. You generally get what you pay for in the battery world. Many people start out with typical "golf cart" batteries, and they will usually last through the warranty period if well cared for. Larger, single-cell systems are a much better choice that will give better performance and longer life. Much has to do with the size of the cell, meaning bigger cells are better. Also, parallel connections are to be avoided whenever possible. For these reasons, you're much better off with 2-volt cells from Solar One, Surrette, or even Trojan. We are always surprised to speak with people who have invested heavily in a nice power system and expensive deep cycle batteries, but they don't have a battery monitor. In fact, we're usually talking to them about a battery-related problem that has been caused by a lack of battery monitoring. Often, the sad news is that their batteries are already at a point of premature failure. A battery monitor is like a fuel gauge that lets you know the state-of-charge (SOC) of your battery. Without it you are merely guessing, and voltage-based monitors (such as those included with many inverters and charge controllers) are nearly worthless. Do yourself a favor and get a good battery monitor, you won't regret it.
